Rectangles

So I've s-l-o-w-l-y been cutting away at my FQ bundle of The Birds and the Bees. I just finished cutting the entire bundle! Man that was a chore! I have yet to see anything anyone has made that I really love out of this line, and I think I know why.... I love this line all together, but only four or five prints by themselves. That's it. Out of what seems to be 30+ prints, I really only like a few. But put them together and I'm captivated. Tula tends to do that to me. I truly only like a few prints, but all together and I can't resist. She's the only one who has that power over me, too. Other designers, nah. I can pick and choose what prints I buy, but with Tula, I gotta get the whole bunch. Dang you, Tula! So I decided that I wanted to make this out of the Birds and Bees thinking it'd be easy. It's not. First off, half rectangles are NOT like HST's, you have to cut them on their diagonal separately. Now for the fussy, too-time-consuming-yet-I-really-like-other-people-doing-it part. Fabric/color play. I want diamonds. Therefore I have to arrange the fabric in certain ways. And I'm not sure how I want the colors to play. Do I want it random? Do I want the blues to form diamonds? The pinks? The purples, etc? I just don't know. So right now I'm calling it good, happy with the fact that I finally finished cutting it all (except not really because I'm going to be adding in some solids to break up the busyness, but I'm pretending I'm done) and I'm going to focus on making Brian's quilt. In the meantime, what do you girls think? I know it's not your style (especially color wise), but any input would be great!

  1. You describe Tula's charm SO WELL! You know I have an LQS that still has Neptune prints in stock? I've been thinking about buying a few just to swap. This might be my favorite line from last year and I bought all of it except the meteors, I think. I want to do the Swoon with this line, and fussy cut the centers. I also want to use a linen as the solid, but have you ever used linen in quilting? I've used Echino. Where can I get a plain linen for quilting that isn't $18/yd?
I like this as a harlequin quilt, but I agree about adding some solids so your eye has a place to rest. If it were me, I'd have to match up the colors in the diamonds. I can't believe you cut out all those triangles! Gag.

    1. And again, how would a Swoon in this fabric look in my house? Serious dilemma.

  2. I feel the same way about Tula. and you seriously need an accuquilt! I think you should do blue or pink diamonds. but that is just because I can't do random. see I AM OCD! I don't think you need to add solids if you go with the blue or pink diamonds. and Mindy, this would be a lovely swoon quilt!

  3. Wow! I would totally grab some of those Neptune prints! I was never able to get any of that line, but it's one of my favorites. I have used linen in quilting, I love it, although it has it's own issues. But you can find it relatively cheap, just search google. And I think quilts belong in any house!

Jenni, you are not OCD. Okay, maybe a little ;) I'll have to lay out some more blocks and see how I like them random or if I even have enough to do color coordinated.

  4. So we all like Tula Pink? She's in my top five. It's funny that she is the place where we all converge. What does that say about her as a designer? Good for her!

    1. I think it must say she is eclectic. She has a wide variety of prints and color schemes that appeal to most people, I suppose. She is definitely in my top five as well!
