Quilting style

Hey gals!  I know, Jenn, you probably saw Rachel's post at Stitched In Color today.  Jenni, you oughtta click on the link and go read it.  It's a great post, and something I've been thinking about for a while.   Jenni and I were talking about this subject recently because she has already noticed distinct differences between our three styles.  This is harder for me to spot.  Being new to quilting, I sometimes feel overwhelmed by so many beautiful quilts and so many fabric choices.  Can I love both feedsack prints AND Anna Maria Horner?  How do I build a useful or helpul stash when my choices are so eclectic?  Wouldn't it be better to choose a particular palette or style and JUST buy fabric that "fits?"  Like Red Pepper Quilts?  Her quilts are so identifiable.  So are Maureen Cracknell's.  So are Allison's of Cluck Cluck Sew.  I know, Jenn, you buy almost exclusively from Hawthorne Threads, but they don't carry Moda.  Do you not like Moda?  Why not?

I think it would be fun to do some of the exercises Rachel suggests, if we need to, and post about them here.  Maybe you guys don't need to...?  Have you defined your quilting style?

BTW, the two quilts Rachel displayed at QuiltCon are complete opposites.  I LOVE the Oodalolly quilt.  It's possibly the most memorable quilt I saw last year.  The Modern Medallion, not so much.  It's beautifully done, but I don't love it.  Can't put my finger on why.

  1. I think that is a great idea! I am struggling with my "style" as well. I don't like either of those quilts. I have a problem with the color. I think they are amazing, and I love the quilting but I would never spend my time making either of them. So I am in.

  2. You know, I think there is a cry in general for people to want to know who they are, and the quilting world is no different. I know what I like and what I don't like. I loved Rachel's Oodalolly quilt and was happy I took the class last year so I know how to make one. I also didn't care for her medallion quilt. That being said, I "appreciate" the blood, sweat, and tears it takes to make any quilt. As for me and Moda? I like Moda just fine. In fact, I have quite a bit of Moda. I just buy what I like and use it. I also know what I don't like and I stay away from that. In fact, I truly dislike low volume quilts. A lot. I love color! That being said, I think it would be fun to follow Rachel's exercises so we can learn more about each other's styles.

  3. Really? I like low volume quilts, but my favorite is when low volume prints are used as a neutral instead of plain old white. Like PRQ's pink hourglass quilt:

Jenn, did you talk to Jenni about doing #1 and posting about it by Sunday? This will be good for me.

    1. I don't mind low volume as a neutral background print, but as a main theme of the quilt (like RPQ most recent baby one
      http://www.redpepperquilts.com/2013/02/a-baby-quilt-not-quite-low-volume.html), NO THANK YOU!

I did let Jenni know to post by Sunday :) looking forward to it!
