Quilt By Numbers Mini Swap

When I found out my guild was swapping minis, I was nervous!  I've never made a quilt for a quilter before, let alone a famous-ish quilter like Sukie or From The Blue Chair.  There's some heavy hitters in the SLMQG!

***EDIT- I 'm entering this in the blogger's quilt festival, just for fun!  I feel so excited and proud that my skills have improved enough that I feel like I have something to contribute.  (Even if the back is a mess, haha!)  Check out all the other entries at Amy's Creative Side.

I really stretched myself while making this mini.  I'm not sure I did the process the "right" way, I'm not even sure there is a "right" way!  I've never appliquéd before, so I was making it up as I went along.  For example, when and how do I applique this thing?  I opted to quilt, then applique, which resulted in an ugly back:

And also am I ever, EVER, E . V . E . R . going to get the hang of machine binding?

I got to bring home this adorable hashtaggy mini from Creative Quilt Girl:

  4. Well I am glad you went for it. I never have been gutsy enough to even bring one of my quilts to my local quilt guild and we don't have heavy hitters like yours. I love that you went for it and thanks for sharing the quilt by number. I really want to try that sometime.

  5. It turned out beautiful! I love the background you ended up choosing. I would have picked that one as well. It really makes the flower stand out.

  8. I think the "right" way to make anything is totally up to you – I tend to do things in a way that makes sense to me (which isnt always the way that others would do it !)

That piecing is simply amazing – this is a fabulous art mini quilt. (Nobody looks at the back !)

Great job. You should be proud of this finish.

  16. 427 tedious steps doesn't sound very enticing, but your quilt looks lovely.

  17. This is incredible! I'm planning to use a very similar technique to make a quilt portrait of my dog.

  18. well the finished quilt looks great! Did you machine or hand applique? I would definitely recommend appliqueing BEFORE quilting and before adding the back -- unless the applique is going to be your quilting
