Books!

I am cursed with a love of books, and fabric...and quilting. And vintage recipe pie plates. Problem is, while I have a library card, I rarely use it. I want to own my books, not borrow books on limited time. And by the time new books hit the library, they've aged quite a bit, as in they are no longer new (not to mention used). And our library system here in Tulsa doesn't carry a large selection of quilting books. Other problem is, new books are a crapshoot, I just never know if it's gonna be a keeper. And I realized that I can't rely upon friends opinions. We had VERY differing ones on Twilight and on the movie Avatar, so they all bombed giving reading and viewing advice, plus, let's face it, there aren't that many quilters around here. So what's a girl supposed to do? Create my own library!! I think that'll suit me just fine. Here's what I've collected over the past 10 years, some golden and some garbage. Now mind you, it's not ALL quilting books, there are some embroidery books thrown in there, and a few sewing books. For Christmas my grandma gave me a HUGE bag of quilting books and patterns, which most I couldn't fit into the bookcase. Here are some of my newer purchases and some of my classics. What about you, what are your favorite quilt/craft books?

That's a lot, huh?

This is my most favorite book! It's not really modern, but it's got a bunch of great patterns and is very detailed  in regards to construction.

This book was written in 1931. It's super old and mildewy. It came from a water damaged library, but it's a great book!

This book was a bit disappointing, there's really only one or two quilts I'd want to make out of it, but I love the author's blog!

  1. How funny, I was going to post about books! You have a great collection! I agree, I borrowed Elizabeth's book from the library in Colorado and decided it was pretty mediocre. My library system here has hardly any contemporary quilting books. I was going to ask you guys for recommendations. I am going to ask the library to buy some. But with all the free information online, it's hard to see the point of amassing a collection of books.

    1. Please post about books! And you're right, there's SO much information online that it has rendered book-buying almost obsolete. I think that's why I'm so disappointed when a book's content I've just purchased can essentially be found various places online. Although sometimes it's nice to just have a book in hand, all in one place. I've preordered "Vintage Quilt Revival" even though I know that it's a compilation of a QAL. I think it's due out in January and I'm hoping I won't be terribly disappointed. I usually buy one book a year, so that will be next year's.

  2. I don't have any quilting books, actually I only own childrens books which I ADORE! I just got S Is FOR Stitch in the mail yesterday and read almost the whole thing while Cooper took a nap. I highly recommend it. she has the best embroidery patterns, so tiny and simple just my style! she is doing a blog hop and giving away 8 books. I couldn't wait I fell so in love. I found the hop at nanacompany.
I totally agree with you, jenn on the whole twilight and avatar thing. can't stand either.
    and that's my two cents!
